Arts Integration: Mosaic

We began our work with the students from Ringling College of Art and Design today!  Lindsey and Chitra will be joining us every Wednesday for the next couple of months.  We are working on a mosaic project.  We started by looking at some mosaic spider art pieces on the Internet.

This week we have been learning about spiders, so we also then talked about how a mosaic is like our learning.  It takes little pieces and puts them together to make a beautiful picture.  Ask your learner about his or her "SCHEMA".  We all have schema in our brains where we store all the things we know or have done. This helps us learn even more.  We created a schema chart and will be using it as we learn more and more information about these fascinating creatures!

Chitra and Lindsey then helped every student cut out two body parts to make their spider:  the abdomen and the cephalothorax.

We used fun Fall papers to create the mosaic design on their back.  Then each student got to put on EIGHT eyes.  Did you know that spiders have eight eyes??  We added that to our schema this morning.

The learners worked so diligently creating their pieces of art.  I'll leave you with a small gallery of their work.  Don't forget to scroll all the way to the bottom to see our spiders on display in the classroom!

Lindsey and Chitra will be back again next week and we'll work on mosaic with other mediums.  We are SO THANKFUL to be part of this amazing project and the opportunity to work with these artists!
